Understanding the mechanism linked to combined abiotic stress tolerance in peach grafted to two different rootstocks: role of phytohormones and interaction with oxidative and amino acid metabolism

This study investigates the impact of future climate change conditions on peach cultivation in Spain, the second-largest peach-producing country globally. The research focuses on the responses of the Catherina cultivar grafted onto two different Prunus rootstocks, GF677 and Adesoto, under elevated CO2, high temperature, and drought conditions. Elevated CO2 positively influenced photosynthesis and growth in GF677, while Adesoto showed photosynthetic acclimation. Elevated temperature induced ABA-dependent stomatal closure in GF677 and ethylene-mediated growth, with Adesoto exhibiting acclimation. Drought stress triggered complex signalling networks, leading to the accumulation of protective pigments and antioxidants. The study emphasizes the importance of understanding cellular oxidative balance and crosstalk between various signalling factors to unravel stress tolerance mechanisms in peach cultivation under climate change scenarios.
