Comparison of Risks of Voles and Other Rodents on Sugar Beet and Other Crops
2021
Frankova, Marcela | Stejskal, Vaclav | Aulicky, Radek et al.
This work outlines the risks that pest-rodents pose to sugar beet and other crops in the field and in warehouses. Traditionally, harmful rodents are classified into two distinct groups: either agricultural (voles, Apodemus etc.) or hygiene pests (mice, brown rats, black rats). The paper provides summary and comparison of the risks posed by voles vs. mice and rats. A review of current literature shows that voles cause not only crop-feeding damage, but are also significant carriers of a number of pathogens of medical and veterinary importance, such as Anaplasma, Bartonella, Borrelia, Coxiella, Francisella, Rickettsia, Salmonella, Leptospira sp. Therefore, the traditional perception of the vole as a predominantly economic pest should be reconsidered. The hygienic and medical aspects of vole as a pest should be reflected in the risk assessment and the approval of pesticide bait products and control methods.
