BACKGROUND: Adenophora triphylla (Thunb.) A. DC. is used for food and medicinal purposes in Eastern Asia including the Republic of Korea. METHODS AND RESULTS: There have been no studies on the genetic diversity of A. triphylla. The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic diversity of A. triphylla resources using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers and to provide basic data for the molecular breeding of A. triphylla. Using eight SSR markers, the genetic diversity of 40 A. triphylla resources was found to be different in various cultivation areas. Genetic analysis using the eight SSR markers revealed a high level of diversity among the genetic resources. In the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean cluster analysis, the 40 A. triphylla genetic resources were divided into clade A and clade B. In clade A, the external morphological characteristics (stem color, leaf shape, and flower color) were identical; however, in clade B, a mixed pattern was observed. CONCLUSIONS: These results may be used as basic data for molecular breeding to identify origin of plants and analyze their relationships using SSR markers.
