Determination of total nitrogen in soil: comparison of Kjeldahl method and elemental analysis
2021
Bilosova, Hana | Zetochova, Petra
The article compares two extended methods for the determination of total nitrogen (N) in soil samples, elemental analysis and Kjeldahl method. Elemental analysis is based on Dumas method. The principle of this method consists in the combustion of samples at a high temperature in a stream of oxygen. In contrast, the Kjeldahl method is based on the mineralization of sample using a catalyst. For determination of total nitrogen by elemental analysis Primacs100 (Skalar) was used. The methods were evaluated on samples from arable land and soils from grasslands. The obtained results were compared using correlation and basic descriptive statistics. Differences in results between methods were minimal in arable land samples but larger difference was found in soil samples from grasslands. Nevertheless, a conclusive correlation between the results determined by elemental analysis and the Kjeldahl method was found. The results will serve as a basis for comparing older analyzes, for which it is no longer possible to perform analyzes on the Primacs100 instrument.
