Breeding for high temperature stress tolerance and identification of associated QTLs in rice

High temperature stress is a significant problem in rice production that can reduce yield. Breeding rice varieties with tolerance to high-temperature stress is necessary for sustaining rice production with continuous increases in temperature. In this study, a total of 50 selected plants of GSR-IR-DQ43 were evaluated for high-temperature stress tolerance together with the parents and checks. Selected materials were exposed to high-temperature stress from sowing until maturity with temperature ranges from 34 deg C to 40 deg C at day and 24 deg C at night. Along with the 50 selected pyramided lines, authors identified 11 pyramided promising lines that represents desirable outcomes with connection to the agro-morphological traits for both IGC and normal field conditions. These lines can provide significant traits to incorporate in future tolerance breeding. Among the twenty-two QTLs identified from flag leaf length, culm diameter, panicle length and pollen sterility distributed in 12 chromosomes, QTLs qCD3, qPL1 and qPS6.1 described significant phenotypic variance of more than 10%. These identified QTLs can be potential candidate for experiencing with high-temperature stress tolerance, mapping and developing marker-assisted breeding in rice with tolerance to high-temperature stress.
