Department of Game, Fish and Tse-tse Control
THE STATE OF THE FISH STOCKSThe catch per unit effort in the ring-net fishery declined perceptibly, taking the year as a whole. In spite of the introduction of a fourth licensee for some months of the year and a rise in total number of ring-net pulls from 9,325 in 1958 to 12,412 in 1959, total ring-net landings fell from approximately 466,000 dozen in 1958 to 423,500 dozen in 1959. This represents a fall in catch of approximately9 per cent. for a rise in effort of about 33 per cent. The calculation, moreover, ignores the fact that nets were, on the whole, larger than those in use in 1958.
