Investigating the Allelopathic Effects of Saltwort (Salsola kali L.) on Seed Germination and Heterotrophic Seedling Growth of Some Crops

In order to investigate the allelopathic effect of dried remains of commonsaltwort plant (Salsola kali) on seed germination characteristics and seedling heterotrophic growth of some crops, the current study was conducted in the laboratoryof agriculture and natural resources faculty in Mohghegh Ardabili University in 2013. The effect of aqueous extract of shoot dry of common saltwort in four concenteration (control, one, three and five %) in a completely randomized design (CRD) was evaluated on germination percentage, speed of germination, root and shoot length and seedling dry matter of safflower, sunflower, wheat, vetch, alfalfa, barley, corn and rapeseed. The results proved the allelopathic effect of common saltwort because all of the evaluated traits on studied crops showed a significant decrease comparing to the control. Obvious damage was observed due to the allelopathic effect of common saltworton germination and p rimary seedling growth of crops. As a result, crop production capacity was decreased when there existed a reduction on the germination percentage, speed of germination, root and shoot length and seedling dry matter. Evidently, of all crops, sunflower, wheat and corn receive less damage from allelochemicals of common saltwort plant. Hence, such mentioned crops are more recommendable in the weed infested fields.
