The authors examine agricultural insurance policies in both the Republic of Serbia and the European Union. In their research, they begin by addressing the fundamental concept of risk, exploring its presence in agricultural production, and its various classifications. Subsequently, their focus turns to the role of institutional support for agricultural insurance as a vital method for mitigating risks in production. The authors argue that active state involvement and support are essential in this domain because, thus far, agricultural producers have displayed limited interest, if any, in safeguarding the outcomes of their production through insurance. The research reveals that, in Serbia, institutional support for this form of risk management is lacking and requires additional efforts for enhancement. Within the European Union, agricultural insurance predominantly remains a voluntary practice, with the exception of Greece and Cyprus, where a mandatory insurance system is in place. The authors conclude that the primary factors hindering the growth of agricultural insurance include a lack of information and knowledge among producers, a general distrust of insurance companies, the advanced age of farmers, and the level of their education.
