Biocontrol of plant diseases and pests is a very dynamic area of research, and many microbial biocontrol agents have been identified and deployed for plant pest management. However, the available products do not yet cover all plant pests. While examples of microbial biocontrol agents with consistent efficacy have been described, the use of microorganisms to control pests is still often considered unreliable under field conditions. In practice, the efficacy of microbial biocontrol agents against plant pests depends on complex factors related to the biological properties of these microorganisms, such as their ecological competence or their modes of action. Although the modes of action of microbial biocontrol agents are often only partially understood, data suggest that they are related to direct and/or indirect interactions with the pest. Other factors that may explain the variable performance of microbial biocontrol agents include environmental conditions (e.g. climate), agricultural practices, and the biology of the target pests. In this chapter, we will discuss the different types of microbial biocontrol agents and their modes of action, as well as the factors that determine their efficacy.
