Genetic progress made in the perennial forage species during the past fifty years | Les progrès génétiques enregistrés depuis 50 ans dans le secteur des espèces fourragères pérennes

إنجليزي. The breeding of forage species in France began only fifteen years ago, along with the modernization and intensification of animal husbandry. Thanks to favourable circumstances, progress has been considerable, as shown in the present paper. Apart from the benefit derived from the emulation among the various teams of workers in this field and the complementarity between public and private research institutions, the forage sector had the particular advantage of profiting from two special organizations, the C.T.P.S. (Permanent Technical Committee for Breeding, a structure with equal participation of the members : farmers, breeders, researchers...) and A.C.V.F. (Association of Creators of Forage Cultivars, grouping forage plant breeders); thanks to these structures, a national list of registrated cultivars could be set up, with the task of evaluating the new creations and warranting their advantages. Recurrent breeding based on individuals and families, bearing at once on several characters, made it possible to increase the forage yields (by 0,36 t DM/ha. per period of ten years), the resistance to various diseases and the quality of the forage. Other methods are also mentioned (chromosome doubling, interspecific or inter-generic crosses, giving rise to strains of Festulolium, male sterility, genetic engineering, etc.); the use of genetic markers does also open new prospects.

فرنسي. La sélection fourragère a débuté en France il y a seulement 50 ans et a accompagné la modernisation et l'intensification de l'élevage. Grâce à un contexte favorable, les progrès ont été considérables et sont ici présentés. Outre l'émulation entre les différentes équipes de recherche et la complémentarité entre recherches publiques et privées, l'organisation particulière du secteur (structure paritaire du CTPS et associative de l'ACVF) a permis de mettre en place un Catalogue national qui évalue et garantit le progrès apporté par chaque variété. La sélection récurrente individuelle et familiale portant simultanément sur plusieurs caractères a permis de progresser pour le rendement fourrager (avec un progrès de 0,36 t MS/ha par période de 10 ans pour le ray-grass diploïde), la résistance à diverses maladies et la qualité du fourrage. D'autres voies de progrès sont également mentionnées (tétraploïdisation, croisements interspécifiques qui ont abouti aux Festulolium, stérilité mâle, génie génétique...) ; l’utilisation du marquage moléculaire ouvre également de nouvelles perspectives.
