ESTRUCTURA GENÉTICA DEL COLIBRÍ DE XANTUS (Hylocharis xantusii) ENDÉMICO DE LA PENÍNSULA DE BAJA CALIFORNIA

"La diversidad y estructura genética de las poblaciones naturales son temas de gran importancia para comprender el estado de conservación ante cambios importantes del ecosistema. La estructura genética poblacional se puede medir empleando marcadores moleculares de ADN mitocondrial que permiten datar la estructura hasta millones de años atrás, o bien, con marcadores de ADN nuclear, como los microsatélites que son altamente variables y permiten conocer la estructura poblacional a escalas temporales más recientes relacionándola con mecanismos ecológicos y de comportamiento que influyen en el intercambio genético dentro y entre las poblaciones. Hylocharis xantusii es un colibrí endémico de la Península de Baja California (PBC), presenta tres poblaciones ancestrales ligadas a eventos vicariantes según el análisis con ADN mitocondrial. Esta especie muestra dimorfismo sexual entre las tres poblaciones. En el presente trabajo se buscó determinar y comprender la estructura genética poblacional actual de la especie. Para esto se usaron loci microsatélites y secuencias del ADN mitocondrial en individuos recolectados a lo largo de la distribución geográfica de la especie. Se emplearon análisis de agrupación bayesiana para determinar la estructura genética para todos los individuos y por sexos, con lo cual se determinaron dos poblaciones puras discontinuas y una zona de mezcla al sur de la PBC. Dicha estructura no es causada por las relaciones familiares, y los análisis por sexos establecieron que los machos determinan la estructura genética poblacional; la mayor capacidad de dispersión las hembras y el comportamiento territorial de los machos defendiendo áreas de alimentación y cortejo pueden explicar estos resultados. En la localidad de San José de Magdalena (SJM) al norte de la distribución de H. xantusii, el 40% de los individuos mostraron una composición genética específica a una de las poblaciones y el 60% restantes a otra la población, de acuerdo con los análisis genéticos se presume que estos individuos no se reproducen entre sí a pesar de estar en el mismo sitio, a diferencia del sur en donde se detectó individuos con mezcla genética de ambas poblaciones. Una hipótesis para explicar lo anterior se puede construir atendiendo al cortejo y los canales de comunicación sexual durante la reproducción de H. xantusii..."

"Diversity and genetic structure of natural populations are topics of great importance to understand the state of conservation in the face of important changes in the ecosystem. The population genetic structure can be measured using molecular markers of mitochondrial DNA that allows the structure to millions of years ago, or with nuclear DNA markers, such as microsatellites that are highly variable and allow to know the population structure at more recent time scales relationship with ecological and behavioral mechanisms that influence genetic exchange within and between populations. Hylocharis xantusii is an endemic hummingbird of the Baja California Peninsula (BCP), it presents three ancestral populations linked to vicarious events according to mitochondrial DNA analysis. It presents sexual dimorphism among the three populations. In the present work we sought to determine and understand the current population genetic structure of this hummingbird. For this, microsatellite loci and mitochondrial DNA sequences were used in individuals collected throughout the geographical distribution of the species. Bayesian cluster analysis was used to determine the genetic structure by all individuals and by sex, thereby determining two discontinuous pure populations and a mixing zone on south of the PBC. This structure is not caused by family relationships, and sex analysis established that males determine the population genetic structure; the greater dispersal capacity of females and the territorial behavior of males defending feeding and courtship areas can explain these results. In the locality of San José de Magdalena (SJM) in north of the distribution of H. xantusii, 40% of the individuals showed a specific genetic composition to one of the populations and the remaining 60% to another population, according to the genetic analysis we presume that these individuals do not reproduce among themselves despite being in the same place, unlike the south where individuals with a genetic mixture of both populations were detected. A hypothesis to explain the above can be constructed based on courtship and sexual communication channels during the reproduction of H. xantusii. The populations in SJM can remain pure, while in the south the communication channels during courtship can be affected by environmental factors that favor crossings between populations..."
