Influence of year and parity on the reproductive performance of Markaduke native pigs

Marinduque [Philippines] is a popular source of native pigs in the country. Farm records (n=215) from the Marduke Native Pig Center -MSC covering 2016 to 2020, was analyzed using general linear model of SAS On Demand to determine if year and parity had effects on reproduction traits. Results show that during the 5-year period, litter size born increased (P=0.0262) from 7.56+-0.60 to 9.39+-0.61 then became stable at 8.00 piglets on average. Litter size born alive also had a similar trend (P=0.0584) while birth weight became heavier from 0.78+-0.11kg to 0.95+-0.08kg. Age at weaning was lowered to as much as 10 days (35 vs 45 days), whereas average weaning weight was maintained at 4kg on average. Parity effects are significant (P0.05) on litter size but not on weights at birth and at weaning. As expected, the reproductive performance of primiparous sows were the lowest (P0.05) compared to the succeeding parities. The parity of the sow at the time the female breeders were born had no effect on the performance of female breeders of the Native Pig Center. With continuous improvement of reproduction traits, particularly litter size, a steady supply of native pigs in the locality will be secured.
