Improving nutrient use efficiency (NUE) is an important strategy to increasing farm productivity and profitability. This study determined the NUE of three corn varieties grown for food (ear shoot) and forage (baby corn fodder) and their morpho-physiological responses to nano FetiGroe sup R-N and urea fertilizers. The crop was harvested at R1 growth stage, (two days after silking) 42-57 days after planting, depending on the variety. There were significant variations in growth parameters due to N source and varieties in both the pot and field experiments. Root weight, length, diameter, and volume, biomass partitioned to stem and ear shoot, and total dry matter were higher in FertiGroe sup R-N treated plots compared to urea. Higher NUE Correlated highly with high chlorophyll (SPAD values) and high % N in leaves in fertilized plants. Variety NK8440 had the highest ear shoot and forage yield using FertiGroe sup R-N while, Pearl Sweet which is early maturing, had high levels of crude protein and crude fiber and the lowest ADF, which are highly desirable qualities of a good fodder. Corn plants treated with FertiGroe sup R-N had higher values of partial factor productivity (PFP), agronomic efficiency (AE), and recovery efficiency (RE) for ear shoot and forage yield compared with urea. NK 8840 had the highest PFP and AE in ear shoot yield using FertiGroe sup R -N among the varieties tested. Results of the study highlight the potential of the FertiGroe sup R-N in improving the quality and quantity of forage and ear shoot and R1 stage and the importance of considering root morphology and plasticity and biomass partitioning to improve NUE. Traits such as improved root characters, early maturity, and high total dry matter (high leaf area and plant height) with efficient uptake and utilization of nitrogen, and harvest index can be considered important considerations in breeding for dual purpose corn.
