Heritability, genetic correlations and genotype by environment interactions in productive traits of the Caribbean scallop, Argopecten nucleus (Mollusca: Bivalvia) | Heredabilidad, correlaciones genéticas y genotipo por interacciones ambientales en rasgos productivos de la vieira caribeña, núcleo de Argopecten (Mollusca: Bivalvia)

Abstract: Argopecten nucleus is a hermaphroditic scallop native to the Caribbean Sea, whose aquaculture production currently relies on hatchery-produced seed. Although this species exhibits a relatively fast growth, its survival, fecundity and commercial size are lower than those of other economically important pectinids. To assess the feasibility to improve productive traits in this species through selective breeding, heritabilities (h2) and genetic correlations (rG) for survival, fecundity and growth were estimated. The existence of genotype by environment interactions (GEI) associated with the culture depth, i.e. location of culture systems in the water column, ware also examined. Fifty sexually mature individuals were individually spawned, collecting female and male gametes separately. The sperm of one “male” was used to fertilize the eggs of four female individuals randomly chosen from the base population, generating 10 half sibling families and 40 full sibling families, in a nested experimental design. Shell length, height, and width, and total wet weight, were measured in 3.5 (juveniles) and nine (adults) months old progenies. Additionally, at 9 months the adductor muscle and remaining soft tissues wet weight were separately measured, and fecundity and survival recorded. The components of the phenotypic variance and heritabilities were estimated using an animal model. Most of the traits exhibited medium to high heritability (h2 ≥ 0.26), with the exception of shell width in juveniles and survival (h2 ≤ 0.18). h2 estimations were generally higher in juveniles than in adults and h2 for fecundity was not significantly different from zero. The growth related traits exhibit significant positive genetic correlations (rG ≥ 0.69), but were not genetically correlated with fecundity or survival. Interestingly, GEI in relation to culture depth were statistically significant. Results suggest a high potential response to direct and indirect selection, indicating that productive traits can be improved through selective breeding. The differential relative performance of different genotypes at different depths will be an important consideration to take into account in designing selective breeding plans for this species.<br /> Resumen:El núcleo de Argopecten es una vieira hermafrodita nativa del Mar Caribe, cuya producción acuícola se basa actualmente en semillas producidas en criaderos. Aunque esta especie exhibe un crecimiento relativamente rápido, su supervivencia, fecundidad y tamaño comercial son más bajos que los de otros pectínidos de importancia económica. Para evaluar la viabilidad de mejorar los rasgos productivos en esta especie a través de la reproducción selectiva, las heredabilidades ( h 2 ) y las correlaciones genéticas ( r G) para la supervivencia, fecundidad y crecimiento se estimaron. También se examinó la existencia de interacciones genotipo por ambiente (GEI) asociadas con la profundidad del cultivo, es decir, la ubicación de los sistemas de cultivo en la columna de agua. Cincuenta individuos sexualmente maduros se generaron individualmente, recolectando gametos femeninos y masculinos por separado. El esperma de un "macho" se usó para fertilizar los huevos de cuatro hembras elegidas al azar de la población base, generando 10 familias de medio hermanos y 40 familias de hermanos completos, en un diseño experimental anidado. La longitud, altura y anchura de la concha, y el peso húmedo total, se midieron en progenies de 3.5 (juveniles) y nueve (adultos) meses. Adicionalmente, a los 9 meses el músculo aductor.y el peso húmedo restante de los tejidos blandos se midió por separado y se registraron la fecundidad y la supervivencia. Los componentes de la varianza fenotípica y las heredabilidades se estimaron utilizando un modelo animal. La mayoría de los rasgos mostraron una heredabilidad media a alta ( h 2  ≥ 0,26), con la excepción del ancho de la concha en juveniles y la supervivencia ( h 2  ≤ 0,18). Las estimaciones de h 2 fueron generalmente más altas en juveniles que en adultos y h 2 para la fecundidad no fue significativamente diferente de cero. Los rasgos relacionados con el crecimiento muestran correlaciones genéticas positivas significativas ( r G ≥ 0,69), pero no se correlacionaron genéticamente con la fecundidad o la supervivencia. Curiosamente, el GEI en relación con la profundidad de la cultura fue estadísticamente significativo. Los resultados sugieren un alto potencial de respuesta a la selección directa e indirecta, lo que indica que los rasgos productivos se pueden mejorar mediante la reproducción selectiva. El desempeño relativo diferencial de diferentes genotipos a diferentes profundidades será una consideración importante a tener en cuenta al diseñar planes de reproducción selectiva para esta especie.
