The objective of this work was to study the effect of different cross-breed pregnancies on the risk of abortion associated to Neospora caninum in Holstein-Friesian dairy cows. In heifers, the likelihood of abortion was 7.6 times lower for pregnant heifers inseminated with Limousin bull semen, compared to those inseminated with Holstein-Friesian bull semen. In parous cows, the likelihood of abortion was 4.8 times lower for pregnant cows inseminated with Limousin bull semen, and 3.0 times lower for those inseminated with Belgian Blue bull semen, compared to dairy cows inseminated with Holstein-Friesian bull semen. The practical recommendation of the present study is the insemination of Neospora-seropositive cows with semen from the Limousin breed.
