Efectos del enriquecimiento ambiental en el comportamiento del Coatí de montaña (Nasuella olivacea) bajo cuidado humano en el Bioparque Wakatá (Tocancipá, Cundinamarca) | Effects of environmental enrichment on the behavior of the mountain coati (Nasuella olivacea) under human care in the Wakatá Biopark (Tocancipá, Cundinamarca)

El Coatí de montaña Nasuella olivacea, es un pequeño mamífero de la familia Procyonidae que en la actualidad se encuentra en categoría de la UICN como casi amenazada, esto debido principalmente a la destrucción de su hábitat. Esta especie se encuentra distribuida en Ecuador y Colombia desde los 2000 m.s.n.m, principalmente en bosques andinos; su alimentación es variada y es oportunista, consume artrópodos en su mayoría además de varios frutales. El enriquecimiento es importante para incentivar ciertos comportamientos típicos que las especies tienen en vida silvestre, además de brindar bienestar a los animales bajo cuidado humano. Estos pueden ser de diferentes tipos como alimenticio, de hábitat o sensorial, entre otros, que ayudan a desarrollar a la especie sus sentidos y su instinto en condiciones ex situ. Los estudios comportamentales y de enriquecimiento de Nasuella olivacea bajo cuidado humano son muy escasos, por ello se implementó un plan de enriquecimiento ambiental en el coatí de montaña y se evaluaron los cambios comportamentales antes, durante y después del enriquecimiento en el Bioparque Wakatá. En total se registraron 44 comportamientos clasificados en 10 categorías comportamentales para esta especie bajo cuidado humano; se observó que los enriquecimientos realizados tuvieron un efecto en las conductas realizadas por estos animales, los cuales disminuyeron las conductas asociadas a comportamientos anormales e inactividad, sin embargo, estas dos categorías no presentaron diferencias estadísticas significativas, por otro lado las conductas de la categoría de exploración aumentaron y presentaron diferencias estadísticas significativas entre las etapas de este estudio

The mountain coati Nasuella olivacea, is a small mammal of the Procyonidae family that is currently in the IUCN category as near threatened, mainly due to the destruction of its habitat. This species is distributed in Ecuador and Colombia from 2000 m.a.s.l., mainly in Andean forests; their diet is varied and they are opportunistic, consuming mostly arthropods as well as various fruit. Enrichment is important to encourage certain typical behaviors that the species have in the wild, in addition to providing welfare to the animals under human care. These can be of different types such as food, habitat or sensory, among others, that help the species to develop their senses and instinct in ex situ conditions. The behavioral and enrichment studies of Nasuella olivacea under human care are very scarce, therefore an environmental enrichment plan was implemented in the mountain coati and the behavioral changes were evaluated before, during and after the enrichment in the Wakatá Biopark. A total of 44 behaviors classified in 10 behavioral categories were recorded for this species under human care; it was observed that the enrichment had an effect on the behaviors performed by these animals, which decreased the behaviors associated with abnormal behaviors and inactivity however, these two categories did not present significant statistical differences, on the other hand, the behaviors of the exploration category increased and presented significant statistical differences between the stages of this study.
