RESUMEN: Este artículo presenta un estudio experimental sobre la compactación de una mezcla asfáltica caliente a través del estudio de imágenes obtenidas mediante tomografía computarizada de rayos X (TC). La mezcla asfáltica atiende las especificaciones de la FAA P-401 (Federal Aviation Administration); la cual ha sido producida con un cemento asfáltico normalizado AC 20 con agregados pétreos propios de la región del Valle de Aburrá y del occidente antioqueño. Las briquetas se elaboraron bajo la metodología Marshall, empleando una fórmula de trabajo con un contenido óptimo de asfalto de 5,9 %. La investigación realizada se aborda desde los enfoques experimental y micromecánico y pretende satisfacer la premisa de que una mezcla asfáltica compactada en laboratorio, con la energía de compactación que le confiere la masa del martillo, el número de golpes, la temperatura de compactación y empleando el mecanismo de impacto; exhibe unas características de acomodamiento de partículas, patrones de permeabilidad, porosidad y densidad diferentes si se le compara con una mezcla asfáltica producida con los mismos materiales pétreos y cemento asfáltico, que ha sido compactada bajo las condiciones de intemperismo propias de la región, con equipos vibratorios y neumáticos, cada uno de ellos con un peso respectivo y un control de la temperatura de compactación disímiles a las que ofrecen las condiciones del laboratorio. La fase de evaluación de la investigación, inicia con la caracterización de las muestras por el comportamiento de su interfaz asfalto-agregado. Esto se logra, empleando la técnica de tomografía computarizada de rayos X sobre especímenes que han sido compactados en el laboratorio y núcleos obtenidos directamente del sitio de colocación de la mezcla. Empleando un software especializado, se logra la reconstrucción de los cortes en un sólido que permite la evaluación de los parámetros de la microestructura de la mezcla asfáltica para ambas técnicas de compactación. La técnica de imágenes diagnósticas por tomografía computarizada de rayos X se viene implementando desde hace cuatro décadas para el análisis de materiales en varias disciplinas de investigación tales como la paleontología, petrología, geotecnia, entre otros. Otros estudios a escala real realizados sobre mezclas asfálticas de gradación abierta, emplearon TC de rayos X, antes y después de que la mezcla asfáltica estuviera en servicio con solicitaciones de tráfico determinadas.

ABSTRACT: This article presents an experimental investigation on the compaction of hot asphalt mixture through the study of images obtained by X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT). The asphalt mix complies asphalt specification P-401 FAA (Federal Aviation Administration); which they have been produced with a standard AC 20 asphalt cement and stone aggregates own the Aburrá Valley region and western Antioquia. The samples were produced under the Marshall method using a compacting temperature thereof in the range of 136 ºC to 141 ºC. A job formula was obtained with an optimum asphalt content of 5,9 %. The research is conducted using experimental and micromechanical approaches, aims to satisfy the premise that an asphalt mixture compacted in the laboratory, with the compaction energy that gives the mass of the hammer, the number of strokes, the compaction temperature and using the impact mechanism; exhibits characteristics of particles accommodation, permeability and porosity patterns and density different; if they are compared with an asphalt mixture produced with the same stone aggregates and asphalt cement, which has been compacted under the weathering conditions of the region, vibratory and pneumatic equipment, each with a respective weight and a temperature control dissimilar to compaction provided in the laboratory environment. The assessment of research begins with the characterization of the samples through the behavior of the asphalt-aggregate interface. This is accomplished using computed tomography X-ray technique on specimens which were compacted in the laboratory and cores obtained directly from the field of placement of the mixture. Using specialized software, reconstruction of the slices is achieved in a solid which allows the evaluation of the parameters of the microstructure of the asphalt mix for both compaction techniques. The technique of diagnostic imaging X-ray CT has been implemented since four decades for the analysis of materials research in various disciplines such as paleontology, petrology, geotechnics, among other causes; according to which states. Other research projects were conducted on full-scale open graded asphalt mixtures, X- ray CT used before and after the asphalt were operated with specific traffic requests.
