Effect of selective insecticides and herbicides on growth and sporulation of entomopathogenic fungi

The entomopathogenic fungi, Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metchnikoff) Sorokin, are cosmopolitan biological control agents that have broad spectrum of pathogenicity against various insect pests of crops. Aside from these beneficial fungi, other crop protection products are used for a more sustainable and cost- effective Integrated Pest Management (IPM). This research explored the effect of these crop protection products being used in corn production including biopesticidec and syn thetic insecticides and herbicides on these entomopathogenic fungi. In vitro tests were conducted with 18 varying modes of action based on Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC) Code and two active ingredients of herbicide as treatments. The effect on mycelial growth of B. bassiana and M. anisopliae was assessed by growing these fungi in artificial media amended with recommended concentration of the insecticides and herbicides. The effect of these products on fungal spore germination was also determined. Majority of the treatments did not affect the mycelial growth and sporulation of both entomopathogenic fungi. Specific IRAC Codes (2B, 1A, and neem-based) and glyphosate had positive effect on spore germination of M. anisopliae. IRAC Code 15 and matrine had a slight antifungal effect on the entomopathogenic fungi. Results suggest the compatibility of crop protection products with entomopathogenic fungi indicating their potential simultaneous use in IPM for corn.
