Regional participatory capacity enhancement on urban agriculture and nutrition-sensitive crop production through edible landscaping: the case selected DA regional field offices

In support of the initiative to strengthen the urban agriculture (UA) programs of the DA Regional Field Offices (RFOs), the University of the Philippines Los Baos Edible Landscaping (EL) Team has proposed a project entitled 'Enhancing Regional Capacities on Urban Agriculture Towards Nutrition-sensitive Crop Production Through Edible Landscaping'which aims to enhance the capacity of DA RFOs through scaling approaches and methodologies for nutrition-sensitive crop production through EL. This was done through the following strategies: (1) creating linkages with selected DA RFOs; (2) creating an EL Training of Trainers (TOT) Manual; (3) facilitating co-learning activities on EL; (4) participatory creation EL Technology Demonstration (Techno-Demo) garden designs; and (5) participatory establishment of EL Techno-Demo gardens. Based on the results of FGD and KII, several UA programs were being conducted in the partner regions such as Gulayan sa Paaralan, Gulayan sa Barangay [Villages], and containerized gardening but there are no programs yet specifically on nutrition-sensitive agriculture (NSA) and EL. In regions 2, 4B, 5, 7, and 11, very few AEWs are familiar on EL and none were familiar with NSA. A total of 145 participants which were composed of AEWs, ATs, faculties, and farm school operators were trained on EL. Post-training evaluations indicated increase in knowledge of participants. Subsequently, among all the topics, participants expressed highest interest on elements and principles of design, and construction of hardscapes. Through the Memoranda of Understanding, it is anticipated that they will cascade the knowledge to their respective stakeholders. Furthermore, three EL Techno-Demo garden designs were developed and established in regions 2, 4b and 5 to serve as learning sites. In each region, at least three indigenous food crops (IFCS) were included. The most commonly preferred IFCs by the DA RFOs were talinum, roselle, and malabar spinach due to their appealing morphology.
