Field evaluation of the effectiveness of a barrier of zeolite for the protection of timber from damage by coptotermes acinaciformis (Isoptera: Rhinotermidae)

A field trial was conducted at Beerburrum, Queensland, Australia, to evaluate the effectiveness of a barrier of zeolite in protecting timber (Pinus elliottii and P. radiata) from subterranean termite damage. The protection afforded by the zeolite was assessed after 11 weeks. The zeolite did not prevent damage by the subterranean termite Coptotermes acinaciformis. The test method provided a high subterranean termite risk and may have application with other potential barrier systems where such conditions are necessary to demonstrate effectiveness.
