Redução de cloreto em partículas de madeira de eucalipto para a produção de pellets | Reduction of chloride in eucalyptus wood particles for the production of pellets

Os impactos das mudanças climáticas, causadas pelo consumo de combustíveis fósseis, têm incentivado esforços de diversos países do mundo para reduzir as emissões de gases de efeito estufa, através da substituição gradativa destes combustíveis por fontes renováveis de energia, especialmente a biomassa sólida. Nesse contexto, o uso de biomassa florestal para a produção de pellets é uma alternativa para a geração de energia, uma vez que, além de minimizar a dependência dos combustíveis fósseis, reduz a emissão de gases de efeito estufa. O Brasil, por suas características naturais, possui grande potencial como fonte de abastecimento, tendo em conta a dimensão e o volume de produção florestal, principalmente do gênero Eucalyptus. No entanto, o elevado teor de cloreto presente nesta biomassa florestal tem causado problemas à saúde humana, devido à formação de gases cancerígenos (dioxinas e furanos), e problemas econômicos como a corrosão e incrustação em sistemas metálicos, fatores que têm restringido a exportação de pellets. Diante do exposto, esse trabalho teve como objetivo principal a redução do teor de cloreto na madeira de eucalipto destinada a produção de pellets, através da lavagem das partículas. Teve como objetivos específicos a determinação das propriedades químicas e o teor de cloreto, empregando- se os métodos do eletrodo seletivo de cloreto e cromatografia de íons para as diferentes partes da árvore, bem como para a madeira lavada. Também foram determinadas as propriedades químicas da madeira de cerne e alburno. Utilizaram-se árvores de um clone de Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla, aos 84 meses de idade, cultivadas em espaçamento 3 x 2 m, em plantio no município de Coimbra, Minas Gerais, sendo determinados o estoque de biomassa e as propriedades químicas da casca, galhos e folhas. A madeira foi cavaqueada, moída, classificada e lavada para a retirada de íons cloreto. A lavagem foi realizada com água deionizada por refluxo em soxhlet, utilizando-se uma relação água/madeira de 25, 50, 75 ou 100 L kg -1 . Após a lavagem determinaram-se as propriedades químicas da madeira, além do teor de cloreto, empregando-se os métodos do eletrodo seletivo de íons e cromatografia de íons. O poder calorífico da casca, galhos e folhas atendeu às exigências das normas ENplus (2015) e ISO18122, porém, o teor de cinza e de cloreto ficou acima do permitido por estas normas. Analisando os componentes do lenho separadamente, constatou-se que o alburno apresentou maiores valores de voláteis, cinzas e holoceluloses, enquanto maiores valores de poder calorífico, carbono fixo, lignina e extrativos totais foram observados para o cerne. De modo geral, a lavagem das partículas não afetou significativamente as propriedades energéticas da madeira. A lavagem das partículas com a menor relação água/madeira (25 L kg -1 ) foi suficiente para remover íons cloreto e atender às exigências das normas ENplus (2015) e ISO18122.

The impacts of climate change caused by the consumption of fossil fuels have stimulate efforts by various countries around the world to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by gradually replacing these fuels with renewable energy sources, especially solid biomass. In this context, the use of forest biomass for the production of pellets is an alternative for the generation of energy, since in addition to minimizing the dependence of fossil fuels, it reduces the emission of greenhouse gases. Brazil, by its natural characteristics, presents itself as a source of promising supply, taking account the size and volume of forest production, mainly of the genus Eucalyptus. However, the high chloride content in this forest biomass has caused human health problems, due to the formation of carcinogenic gases (dioxins and furans), and economic problems, such as corrosion and incrustation in metallic systems, has restricted the export of pellets. In view of the above, this work had as main objective the reduction of chloride content in the eucalyptus wood destined to the production of pellets, through the washing of particles. Specific objectives were the determination of the chemical properties and the chloride content using the methods of the selective electrode chloride and ion chromatography for the different parts of the tree, as well as for the washed wood. The chemical properties of heartwood and sapwood were also determined. We used trees of one clone of Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla, at 84 months of age, cultivated in spacing 3 x 2 m, were harvested from a plantation in the municipality of Coimbra, Minas Gerais, and the biomass stock and properties chemical properties of bark, twig and leaf. The wood was cavaqueada, ground, classified and washed for the removal of the chloride ions. Washing was carried out with deionized water in reflux in soxhlet using a water / wood ratio of 25, 50, 75 or 100 L kg -1 . After the washing, the chemical properties of the wood were determined, besides the determination of the chloride content using the methods of the ion selective electrode and ion chromatography. The calorific value of the bark, twig and leaf met the requirements of the ENplus (2015) and ISO18122 standards, however, the gray and chloride content were higher than allowed by these standards. Analyzing the wood components separately, it was verified that the sapwood presented higher values of volatiles, ashes and holocelluloses, already at the core higher values of calorific value, fixed carbon, lignin and total extractives. In general, washing the particles did not significantly affect the energy properties of the wood. The washing of the particles with 25 L kg -1 has been sufficient for removal of chloride and compliance with the ENplus (2015) and ISO18122 standards.
