Estimación de la eficiencia de uso de agua en maíz (Zea mays) mediante técnicas isotópicas δ2H (Deuterio, D) y δ18O (Oxígeno 18) bajo distintos criterios de riego | Estimation of water use efficiency in maize (Zea mays) through the use of isotopic techniques δ2H (Deuterium, D) and δ18O (Oxygen 18) under different irrigation levels

El 76% de la superficie de Chile está afectada por sequía por lo que es fundamental utilizar prácticas y tecnologías que permitan maximizar la eficiencia del uso de agua (EUA) en la agricultura. La EUA se puede cuantificar en base a la cantidad de biomasa generada en relación con el aporte de agua que recibe un cultivo. Una de las alternativas para aumentar la EUA es generar un déficit hídrico moderado previo a la fase reproductiva, lo que disminuye el crecimiento vegetativo y favorece el crecimiento reproductivo aumentando la relación entre producción y cantidad de agua utilizada. Sin embargo, en el caso de un estrés hídrico severo, existe un cierre estomático y se adelanta la senescencia del cultivo lo que puede perjudicar drásticamente la producción. Se realizó un ensayo en la Comisión Chilena de Energía Nuclear (CCHEN) con el objetivo de comparar la EUA en el cultivo de maíz bajo 3 escenarios de riego: 70% de la ETC, 50% de la ETC y 35% de la ETC durante toda su etapa de desarrollo. Se utilizaron técnicas isotópicas de δ2H (Deuterio, D) y δ18O (Oxígeno 18) que permitieron medir y diferenciar con precisión la evaporación y transpiración del agua, que junto a un monitoreo constante del contenido de agua del suelo permitió realizar un análisis a nivel suelo-agua-planta, demostrando que la fracción de transpiración no varió significativamente en los tratamientos, obteniendo una mayor EUA con 35% de la ETC potencial. También se validó el programa AquaCrop para predecir los contenidos de agua del suelo, agua evaporada y agua transpirada bajo los distintos tratamientos, permitiendo analizar de forma accesible el sistema.

Around 76% of the surface of Chile is affected by drought, so it is essential that practices and technologies that allow maximizing the water use efficiency (WUE) in agriculture are used. WUE can be quantified based on the amount of biomass generated in relation to the water supply received by a crop. One of the alternatives to increase WUE is to generate a moderate water deficit prior the reproductive phase, which decreases vegetative growth and favors reproductive growth, increasing the relationship between production and amount of water used. However, in the case of severe water stress, there is a stomatal closure, and the senescence of the crop is advanced, which can drastically affect production. A trial was conducted at Comisión Chilena de Energía Nuclear (CCHEN) with the goal to compare WUE in maize crops under 3 irrigation scenarios: 70% ETC, 50% ETC and 35% ETC during irrigation throughout its development stage. Isotopic techniques δ2H (Deuterium, D) y δ18O (Oxygen 18) used made it possible to accurately measure and differentiate water evaporation and transpiration applied with constant monitoring of soil water content, allowed analysis on the soil-water-plant level. This analysis proved that the transpiration fraction does not vary significantly across treatments, meaning a greater WUE with 35% of the potential ETC was obtained. It was also possible to validate the AquaCrop program, which made it possible to predict the water content of the soil, water evaporated, and water transpired under the different treatments, allowing the system to be analyzed in an accessible way.
