Auftreten der <em>Fusarium</em>-Kolbenfäule im Maisanbau in Deutschland und Maßnahmen zur Vermeidung der Mykotoxinbelastung in Maiskörnern

In einem zweijährigen Monitoring wurden bundesweit 84 Körnermais-Proben auf <i>Fusarium</i>-Befall und Mykotoxinbelastung untersucht. Dreizehn <i>Fusarium</i>-Arten wurden als Erreger der <i>Fusarium</i>-Kolbenfäule identifiziert. Im Jahr 2006 dominierten die Arten <i>F. verticillioides</i>, <i>F. graminearum</i> und <i>F. proliferatum</i>, 2007 <i>F. graminearum</i>. Die mittlere <i>Fusarium</i>-Befallshäufigkeit lag im Jahr 2006 bei 32,4 %, die maximale Befallshäufigkeit bei 99,7 %. In der Vegetationsperiode 2007 wurden ein mittlerer <i>Fusarium-Befall</i> von 21,7 % und eine maximale Befallshäufigkeit von 64 % ermittelt. Kornproben aus beiden Vegetationsperioden waren häufig mit Deoxynivalenol, 3-Acetyldeoxynivalenol und 15-Acetyldeoxynivalenol (15-AcDON) belastet. Fumonisin-Kontaminationen wurden 2006 in 16 Kornproben, 2007 nie quantifiziert. Zearalenon (ZON) wurde 2006 in 27 %, 2007 in 93 % der Kornproben nachgewiesen. Mehrfach wurden in beiden Jahren Belastungen mit Nivalenol (NIV), Moniliformin (MON), Beauvericin (BEA) und Enniatin B ermittelt. Belastungen mit den Typ A-Trichothecenen T-2-Toxin, HT-2-Toxin oder Acetoxyscirpenol waren selten. <br /> Die Witterungsbedingungen beeinflussten das Arten- und Mykotoxinspektrum der <i>Fusarium</i>-Kolbenfäule: Hohe Temperaturen zur Blüte und Kornbildung förderten den Befall mit <i>F. verticillioides</i> bzw. <i>F. proliferatum</i> sowie die Fumonisin-Belastung. Moderate Witterungsbedingungen verstärkten den Befall mit <i>F. graminearum</i> und <i>F. subglutinans</i> sowie die Akkumulation von 15-AcDON, ZON und NIV in Maiskörnern. MON- bzw. BEA-Belastungen waren in warmen Vegetationsperioden auf den Befall Fumonisin-produzierender Arten, in gemäßigten Vegetationsperioden auf <i>F. avenaceum</i> und <i>F. subglutinans</i> zurückzuführen. <br /> In mehrjährigen Feldversuchen wurde der Effekt Azol-haltiger Saatgut- und Sprossbehandlungen auf <i>Fusarium</i>-Befall und Mykotoxinbelastung von Maiskörnern untersucht. Azol-haltige Saatgutbehandlungen verzögerten die Ausbreitung des <i>Fusarium</i>-Befalls im Maisstängel, besaßen aber keine Wirkung gegen die <i>Fusarium</i>-Kolbenfäule. Azol-haltige Sprossbehandlungen zur Blüte bzw. Kornbildung gewährleisteten eine Minimierung des <i>Fusarium</i>-Befalls und der Mykotoxinbelastung der Maiskörner. Dabei hatten Kolben-nahe Fungizidapplikationen eine größere Wirkungssicherheit als horizontale Fungizidbehandlungen oberhalb der Maispflanzen.<br /> Die praxisübliche Trocknung von Körnermais minimiert die weitere Mykotoxinbildung während der Lagerung, da sie die Vitalität von <i>Fusarium</i> spp. im Korn verringert. Bau- und Betriebsbedingt reduzierte die Durchlauftrocknung die Vitalität von <i>Fusarium</i> spp. effizienter als eine Satztrocknung. Die <i>Fusarium</i>-Arten <i>F. verticillioides</i> und <i>F. graminearum</i> unterschieden sich in ihrer Widerstandskraft gegenüber dem Trocknungsprozess. Die Ergebnisse zum Auftreten der <i>Fusarium</i>-Kolbenfäule und der daraus resultierenden Mykotoxinbelastung verdeutlichen die Notwendigkeit der Etablierung von Maßnahmen zur Vermeidung der Mykotoxinbelastung in Maiskörnern. Erstmalig wurde ein häufiges Auftreten Fumonisin-produzierender Arten im Maisanbau in Deutschland beschrieben. Die Ergebnisse zum Einfluss der Witterungsbedingungen auf Befallsintensität und Mykotoxinbelastung verbessern unser Verständnis der Epidemiologie von <i>Fusarium</i>-Arten und weisen auf eine umweltabhängige Mykotoxinbildung in den Körnern hin. Die mehrjährigen Feldversuche zum Einfluss Azol-haltiger Saatgut- und Sprossbehandlungen belegen die Wirksamkeit von Fungizidapplikationen als Maßnahme eines integrierten Pflanzenschutzes zur Bekämpfung der <i>Fusarium</i>-Kolbenfäule.

<strong>Impact of <em>Fusarium</em> ear rot on maize in Germany and strategies preventing mycotoxin contamination in maize kernels</strong><br /> A two-year survey was carried out in Germany analysing a total of 84 maize samples in order to determine the incidence and severity of <i>Fusarium</i> ear rot, and to quantify the mycotoxin contamination of maize kernels. Microbiological and molecular methods were applied identifying <i>Fusarium</i> isolates at the species level. Fungal biomass of <i>Fusarium</i> species were quantified using TaqMan® real-time PCR assays and mycotoxin contamination was analysed using a multi-toxin method detecting 32 secondary metabolites. Thirteen <i>Fusarium</i> species were identified as pathogens causing <i>Fusarium</i> ear rot. <i>F. verticillioides</i>, <i>F. graminearum</i> and <i>F. proliferatum</i> were the predominant <i>Fusarium</i> species in 2006. <i>F. graminearum</i> was by far the most frequent species in 2007. In 2006 and 2007, average and maximum frequencies of <i>Fusarium</i>-infected kernels were 32.4 % and 99.7 %, and 21.7 % and 64 %, respectively. Contaminations with deoxynivalenol (DON) and its acetylated derivates 3-AcDON and 15-AcDON were frequently detected in both growth periods. In 2006, fumonisins were present in 16 samples whereas concentrations were below the limits of quantification in all samples in 2007. Zearalenon (ZON) was detected in 27 % of the samples in 2006 and in 93 % of the samples in 2007. Nivalenol (NIV), moniliformin (MON), beauvericin (BEA) and enniatin B were also common contaminants of maize kernels in both growth periods. Frequency and concentrations of type A-trichothecences, T-2-toxin, HT-2-toxin and acetoxyscirpenol were low.<br /> Environmental conditions influenced the spectrum of <i>Fusarium</i> species and mycotoxins associated with <i>Fusarium</i> ear rot: High temperatures at anthesis and during kernel development favoured the occurrence of <i>F. verticillioides</i> and <i>F. proliferatum</i> as well as fumonisin contamination. Moderate environmental conditions promoted the incidence of <i>F. graminearum</i> and <i>F. subglutinans</i> as well as the content of 15-AcDON, ZON and NIV, respectively. In warm growth periods, MON and BEA contaminations were related to the occurrence of fumonisin-producing species. With temperate weather, MON and BEA contaminations were caused predominantly by <i>F. avenaceum</i> and <i>F. subglutinans</i>.<br /> The effect of seed treatments and spray applications containing azoles on <i>Fusarium</i> ear rot and the associated mycotoxin concentration was investigated in field trials. Azole-containing seed treatments delayed the systemic growth of <i>Fusarium</i> spp. in maize stalks; however, had no effect on <i>Fusarium</i> ear rot. Spray applications of azoles at anthesis and during kernel development resulted in a reduction of <i>Fusarium</i> ear rot and the mycotoxin contamination in maize kernels. Spray application close to the maize cob had a higher effectiveness than a fungicide application horizontally above the maize plants, Due to the reduction in the viability of <i>Fusarium</i> spp. in kernels, the drying process of maize kernels commonly used in agricultural practice minimizes further mycotoxin synthesis during storage. Flow path drying systems reduced the viability of <i>Fusarium</i> spp. more efficiently than batch drying systems. Regarding the viability, <i>F. verticillioides</i> and <i>F. graminearum</i> differed in their sensitivity to the drying process. <br /> The results highlight the need of management strategies enabling a mycotoxin reduction in maize kernels. High frequency of fumonisin-producing species in maize in Germany was reported for the first time. Understanding the influence of environmental conditions on disease incidence and severity, and mycotoxin contamination contribute to an increased knowledge in the epidemiology of <i>Fusarium</i> species and the prediction of mycotoxin spectrum in maize. A technical optimized application of azole-containing fungicide at anthesis and during kernel development, respectively, will be a fundamental strategy in an integrated pest management controlling <i>Fusarium</i> ear rot.
