On-farm hatching in organic and low-input outdoor farms (PPILOW Practice Abstract)
2024
Collin, Anne | Travel, Angélique | Pluschke, Helen
The tool proposes an alternative to transport of one-day chicks from hatchery to farm by delivering 18-day incubated eggs and concluding the incubation on farm. In this way, feed and water are directly available for newly hatched chicks, reducing risks of weight loss and dehydration limiting stress from manipulation and transport. Improvement of chick quality scores and animal welfare has been observed on-farm. Well-insulated chick facilities, specific equipment and constant monitoring and regulation of environmental temperatures are essential to implement this practice. Order 18-day old vaccinated eggs from the hatchery or perform mandatory vaccination on-farm on day one.
