Helmintos de pollos criados en libertad en agrosistemas en conversión a la agroecología en el suroeste de España | Helminths of chickens free raised in agrosystems in conversion to agroecology in the southwest of Spain

Esta tesis aborda el estudio de las comunidades helmínticas en explotaciones avícolas agroecológicas ligadas a la conservación de razas autóctonas como es la Extremeña Azul, con el objetivo de conocer el riesgo que pudieran suponer estas parasitosis para la producción de carne de pollo. Para ello se realizaron tres experimentos diferentes en los que se investigaron los helmintos encontrados en las necropsias y se obtuvieron los parámetros descriptivos de parasitación (prevalencia, intensidad y abundancia medias) e índices de biodiversidad, relacionándolo con su posible incidencia en las producciones. En el primer experimento se estudiaron y compararon las comunidades helmínticas de pollos Extremeña Azul recriados en dos agrosistemas diferentes situados en el suroeste de España, uno de secano y otro de regadío. La prevalencia de cestodos fue 54% en secano y 98% en regadío, la de nematodos fue 100% en ambos agrosistemas. Se identificaron 12 especies: siete cestodos y 5 nematodos. De los cestodos, 4 estaban presentes en ambos agrosistemas: Raillietina echinobothrida, R. tetragona, Skrajabinia cesticillus y Echinolepis carioca, y 3 solo en regadío Davainea proglottina, Amoebotaenia cuneata y Choanotaenia infundibulum. En cuanto a los nematodos, Heterakis gallinarum y Ascaridia galli fueron comunes en ambos agrosistemas, Baruscapillaria obsignata solo en secano, y Eucoleus annulatus y Aonchotheca caudinflata solo en regadío. La comunidad de secano tuvo menor riqueza específica que la de regadío, cuya mayor biodiversidad se atribuye a la abundancia de hospedadores intermediarios. En el segundo experimento se analizó el impacto de las helmintosis sobre la producción de carne de pollo Extremeña Azul en sistema “scavenging” en regadío, en función de la climatología del año y la edad de sacrificio (18 y 22 semanas de edad). Todos los animales presentaron infestaciones mixtas por cestodos y nematodos (100%). Se identificaron las mismas 11 especies halladas en el agrosistema de regadío en el experimento 1. El análisis de los parámetros productivos no mostró correlación significativa con las tasas de parasitación por helmintos en general, ni por grupos taxonómicos (cestodos y nematodos), si bien se halló una correlación negativa estadísticamente significativa entre la carga parasitaria de D. proglottina y el rendimiento cárnico de los pollos del lote en el que este cestodo alcanzó mayor prevalencia. Los pollos de 18 semanas tuvieron infestaciones más biodiversas e intensas el año más lluvioso, y mejores rendimientos, pues dispusieron de más recursos alimenticios vegetales y de presas, algunas transmisoras de helmintos. Prolongar la recría hasta las 22 semanas no tuvo consecuencias significativas sobre las helmintosis, se obtuvieron canales más pesadas y mejoró el rendimiento cárnico, aunque la carne resultó menos tierna. Las helmintosis no parecen ser un factor limitante para la producción agroecológica de carne de pollo de raza Extremeña Azul. El tercer experimento tuvo como objetivo analizar las tasas de parasitación por helmintos en tres estaciones (invierno, primavera y verano) en un agrosistema de regadío con clima mediterráneo, empleando pollos Cornish Red recriados en libertad durante dos meses en cada estación. La riqueza específica de helmintos fue 9 en invierno, 10 en primavera y 11 en verano. La riqueza, prevalencia, intensidad y abundancia de los cestodos aumentaron de invierno a verano, correlacionándose positivamente con la temperatura y evapotranspiración y negativamente con la precipitación y humedad relativa.

This Final Degree Project studies the helminthic population found in agroecological poultry farms linked to the conservation of autochthonous breeds such as the Extremeña Azul. The aim of this study was to assess the risk that these parasitosis could pose to production of chicken meat. Consequently, three different experiments were carried out, in which the helminths found during necropsies were analyzed in a general way and the descriptive parasitic parameters (prevalence, average intensity and abundance) and biodiversity índices were obtained, and the possible influence on the animal production was thus, evaluated. In the first experiment, the helminth population obtained from chickens reared in two different agrosystems located in southwestern Spain, one rainfed and the other irrigated, were studied and compared. The prevalence of cestodes was 54% in dry land and 98% in irrigated land, whereas a 100% prevalence was detected for nematodes in both agrosystems. Twelve species were identified: seven cestodes and five nematodes. En respect to cestodes, four were present in both agrosystems: Raillietina echinobothrida, R. tetragona, Skrajabinia cesticillus and Echinolepis carioca, and only three were detected in irrigated land: Davainea proglottina, Amoebotaenia cuneata and Choanotaenia infundibulum. Regarding nematodes, Heterakis gallinarum and Ascaridia galli were common in both agrosystems, Baruscapillaria obsignata was only detected in dry land, and Eucoleus annulatus and Aonchotheca caudiinflata were observed only in irrigated land. Animals from the rainfed community showed lower parasite variety than those from the irrigated community. This broader biodiversity in the irrigated agrosystem is likely due to a higher presence of intermediate hosts. In the second experiment, the influence of helminthic diseases on the production of autochthonous chicken meat in scavenging system in the irrigated agrosystem was analyzed, according to the different environmental factors throughout the year and the age of slaughtering (18 and 22 weeks of age). All animals presented mixed infections by cestodes and nematodes (100%). The same eleven species already found in the irrigated agrosystem in experiment 1, were also detected. The analysis of production parameters neither showed significant correlation with the rate of the helminth burden, nor with the taxonomic groups (i.e. cestodes and nematodes), although it was found a statistically significant negative correlation between the parasite burden of D. proglottina and the meat yield of chickens from the flock in which this cestode reached the highest prevalence. The 18-week-old chickens showed higher biodiversity and more intense infestation in the rainiest year, and better yields, probably due to a more availability of plant food resources and prey, some of which can transmit helminths. Extending rearing up to 22 weeks did not showed significant consequences on helminth infections, heavier carcasses were obtained and meat yield improved, although the meat was less tender. Helminth diseases did not seem to be a limiting factor for the agroecological production of chicken meat of the Extremeña Azul breed. The goal of the third experiment was to analyze the parasite rate of helminths throughout three seasons (winter, spring and summer) in an irrigated agrosystem with a Mediterranean climate. For this, Cornish Red chickens rebred for two months in the irrigated agrosystem were used. The specific biodiversity of helminths was nine, ten and eleven in winter, spring and summer, respectively the biodiversity, prevalence, intensity and presence of cestodes increased from winter to summer, and showed a positive correlation with temperature and evapotranspiration and negatively with precipitation and relative humidity.
