In this context, an alternative surveying procedure using a boat borne radar is presented. This method is compared to two other techniques: Infrared aerial photogrammetry and mobile laser scanning in order to assess their convenience to delineate the stream channel. As in steep sided river valleys the delineation of the stream channel is particularly complex, the study focuses on two reaches of respectively 23 km and 2 km long, along the Ardeche River where the three techniques have been put to the test. Some specific situations such as effects of the overhanging cliffs have been taken into account to complete the study. Finally a comparison of the adequacy of the systems with respect to the conditions of use, cost of equipment, operational costs and data volume was carried out.
