This is the carbon (C) paradox.• The role of agriculture and ruminants in climate change has to be considered relative to other sectors and the evolution of their contribution since the beginning of the20th century.• Grasslands have the potential to sequester C, which helps to reduce global warming, and provide many other ecosystem services.• A large part of these ecosystem services are closely linked to the presence of ruminants and grazing.• Looking beyond climate change, considering other issues that are vital to the future of the planet encourages the maintenance of ruminant livestock farming that makes the most of grassland.
