Seroprevalência de infeção por toxoplasma gondii em animais domésticos de São Tomé

A toxoplasmose, uma das zoonoses mais difundidas no mundo, é causada por Toxoplasma gondii, um protozoário parasita intracelular obrigatório que tem os felídeos como únicos hospedeiros definitivos e que pode afetar a maior parte dos animais homeotérmicos. A infeção por este protozoário é uma importante causa de abortos e mortalidade neonatal em várias espécies incluindo caprinos, ovinos e seres humanos. Nos humanos é ainda importante salientar o elevado impacto socioeconómico em termos de saúde pública, com custos elevados de tratamento, sofrimento de doentes e consequências como deficiência mental, cegueira ou mesmo morte. Uma vez que a República Democrática de São Tomé e Príncipe representa uma área geográfica pouco estudada, o principal objetivo deste trabalho final de curso foi determinar a seroprevalência de infeção por T. gondii em animais domésticos de São Tomé. Soros de 346 animais foram testados, entre agosto a outubro de 2017, para a pesquisa de imunoglobulinas (Ig) G anti-T. gondii através do teste de aglutinação modificado (“modified agglutination test” – MAT), tendo sido obtida uma seroprevalência geral de infeção de 55,8% (193/346). Dos 193 animais seropositivos, 6,7% (13/193) eram bovinos, 34,7% (67/193) eram ovinos, 35,2% (68/193) eram caprinos e, 23,3% (45/193) eram suínos. Verificou-se a existência de uma seroprevalência de infeção de 27,1% (13/48) em bovinos, 68,4% (67/98) em ovinos, 70,1% (68/97) em caprinos, 43,7% (45/103) em suínos. Os resultados do presente estudo sugerem uma elevada exposição dos animais domésticos de São Tomé às formas infetantes de T. gondii, realçando a importância da necessidade de realização de mais estudos sobre a infeção por este protozoário em outros hospedeiros incluindo o cão e o gato.

Toxoplasmosis, one of the most widespread zoonosis in the world, is caused by Toxoplasma gondii, an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite that can infect most of warm blooded animals, with domestic and wild felids being it´s unique and definitive hosts. T. gondii infection may lead to abortion in several species including sheep, goats and humans. In humans, it is still important to emphasize the high socio-economic impact in terms of public health, with high costs of treatment, patient suffering and consequences such as mental deficiency, blindness or even death. Since the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe represents a poorly studied area, the main objective of this work was to determine the seroprevalence of infection by T. gondii in domestic animals from São Tomé. Sera from 346 animals were tested for the presence of immunoglobulins (Ig) G to T. gondii, by using the modified agglutination test (MAT), with an overall seroprevalence of 55.8% (193/346). Out of the 193 seropositive animals, 6.7% (13/193) were cattle, 34.7% (67/193) were sheep, 35.2% (68/193) were goats and 23.3% (45/193 ) were pigs. According to the animal species 27.1% (13/48) of cattle, 68.4% (67/98) of sheep, 70.1% (68/97) of goats and 43.7% (45/103) of pigs were found to be infected with T. gondii. The results of the present study suggest a high exposure of the domestic animals of São Tomé to the infective forms of T. gondii, emphasizing the importance of further studies on the infection by this protozoan in other hosts including the dog and the cat.
