Neoplasias oculares em cães e gatos : estudo retrospetivo 2001-2012

Apresenta-se um estudo sobre os casos de neoplasias oculares, em cães e gatos, analisados pelo Laboratório de Anatomia Patológica da Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (FMV-UTL), entre 2001 e 2012. Este estudo pretende contribuir para o conhecimento da prevalência das neoplasias oculares em cães e gatos na região de Lisboa, auxiliando no diagnóstico e na terapêutica de futuros casos de neoplasias oculares. A população total estudada foi de 173 cães e de 59 gatos. Foram analisadas 192 neoplasias oculares caninas e 65 felinas, sendo a neoplasia ocular a unidade estatística. Analisou-se estatisticamente parâmetros como: raça, sexo, idade, estrutura ocular afetada, diagnóstico anatomopatológico e terapêutica instituída. O estudo estatístico foi efetuado nos programas R-Statistics® e Microsoft Office Excel 2007®. Os cães de raça indeterminada (25,8%) e os gatos da raça Europeu Comum (76,9%) foram os mais afetados. No caso das raças caninas puras, as mais afetadas foram a Retriever do Labrador (15,2%), a Caniche (12,6%) e a Cocker Spaniel (6,4%). No caso dos gatos, as raças Persa (7,7%) e Siamesa (6,2%) foram as raças puras representadas. A idade média dos animais afetados foi de 10,5 ± 3,7 anos (mínima de 1 ano e máxima de 19 anos). Nos cães, o epitelioma, o adenoma e o melanoma foram as neoplasias mais observadas com prevalências de, respetivamente, 25,0%, 19,3% e 14,1%. As estruturas mais atingidas foram as glândulas de Meibom (41,7%), as pálpebras (21,4%) e a órbita (5,7%). O epitelioma (20,8%) e o adenoma (15,1%) das glândulas de Meibom foram as neoplasias mais frequentes nos cães. Nos gatos, as neoplasias mais frequentemente diagnosticadas foram o carcinoma (35,4%), o melanoma maligno (21,5%) e o linfoma maligno (16,9%). O globo ocular (21,5%), a íris (18,5%) e as pálpebras (20,0%) foram as estruturas mais atingidas. O melanoma difuso da íris e o carcinoma palpebral de células escamosas foram as neoplasias mais encontradas em gatos, ambas perfazendo 12,3%. A exérese da neoplasia, com preservação do globo ocular, foi o tratamento mais realizado em cães (70,8%). Tanto a exérese da massa como a enucleação foram os tratamentos mais efetuados nos gatos (30,8%). A exenteração foi o procedimento menos frequente em ambas as espécies, todavia nos gatos apresentou uma incidência maior (13,8%) do que nos cães (2,1%). Em conclusão, os resultados obtidos apontam para prevalências elevadas de neoplasias em estruturas oculares específicas, o que deve ser tido em conta no diagnóstico diferencial de doenças oculares em cães e gatos.

ABSTRACT - OCULAR TUMORS IN DOGS AND CATS – RETROSPECTIVE STUDY 2001-2012 -A study on cases of ocular tumours in dogs and cats is presented. For that purpose, the records of the Pathology Laboratory of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Lisbon Technical University were reviewed from 2001 to 2012. This study aimed to contribute to the knowledge of the prevalence of ocular tumours in dogs and cats in the Lisbon region and to help in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of future cases of ocular tumours. The studied sample included 173 dogs and 59 cats. A total of 192 canine ocular neoplasms and 65 feline ocular neoplasms were analyzed as the statistical unit was the ocular tumour. Statistical analysis included: the affected breeds, the animals’ age and sex, the ocular structure, the histopathologic diagnosis and the treatment protocol. The statistical analysis was done using R-Statistics© and Microsoft Office Excel 2007©. Concerning the affected breeds, mongrel dogs (25.8%) and the Domestic Shorthair cat (76.9%), were the most affected. The other observed pure feline breeds were the Persian (7.7%) and the Siamese (6.2%). Considering the canine pure breeds, the most affected were the Labrador Retriever (15.2%), the Poodle (12.6%) and the English Cocker Spaniel (6,4%). The mean age of the studied animals was 10.5 ± 3.7 years old (minimum of 1 year old and maximum of 19 years old). In dogs, epithelioma, adenoma and melanoma were the most observed tumours with prevalences of, respectively, 25.0%, 19.3% and 14.1%. The most affected structures were the Meibomian glands (41.7%), the eyelids (21.4%) and the orbit (5.7%). Epithelioma (28.8%) and adenoma (15.1%) of the Meibomian glands were the most common neoplasms found in dogs. In cats, the most frequently diagnosed tumours were carcinoma (35.4%), melanoma (21.5%) and malignant lymphoma (16.9%). The eyeball (21.5%), the iris (18,5%) and the eyelids (20.0%) were the most affected structures. Diffuse iris melanoma (12,3%) and squamous cell carcinoma of the eyelids (12,3%) were the most common tumours in cats. The excision of the neoplasm, with the preservation of the globe, was the most frequent treatment in dogs (70.8%). Excision and enucleation were the most frequent treatments in cats (30.8%). Exenteration was the less common procedure in both cats and dogs, although it was performed more in cats (13.8%) than in dogs (2.1%). To sum up, this study indicates high incidence of eye tumors in specific eye structures. This should be taken into consideration in the differential diagnosis of ocular diseases in dogs and cats.
