The experiment was carried out at the Experimental Nucleus of Agrarian Sciences of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, in Dourados – MS, in the 1998/99 crop season. The experimental design used was randomized blocks with three replications. Treatments were arranged in split plots schemes and Raphanus stativus L. var. oleiferus Metzg and Avena strigosa Schieb previous crops established plots. Subplots were established by three corn hybrids: Cargil-855, Cargil-901 and Cargil-909. On subplots 4 doses of Nitrogen were applied as covering (0; 60; 90 and 120 kg.ha-1). Variance analysis for stem diameter, plant dried matter, ear index, ear length and grain yield indicated that there were not significant differences (p≤ 0.05) for previous crops, hybrids and Nitrogen doses. Cargil-909 hybrid presented the highest plant height and C 901 the smallest ear diameter. Cargil 855 hybrid presented the greatest incidence and severity of Phaeosphaeria maydis, differing significantly from other hybrids.
