LA ROYA DEL CAFETO EN COLOMBIA: REALIZACIONES DE IMPACTO NACIONAL E INTERNACIONAL EN EL SIGLO XX THE COFFEE RUST IN COLOMBIA: ACHIEVEMENTS OF NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL IMPACT IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

La roya del cafeto (Hemileia vastatrix), desde los comienzos del siglo XX fue una constante preocupación de los colombianos, hasta cuando arrivó al Brasil en 1970. A partir de ese momento, Colombia tomó una serie de acciones orientadas afrontar la eminente llegada del patógeno. Las medidas estuvieron orientadas al fortalecimiento científico en CENICAFÉ y cuarentenario en el ICA; así como de la preparación de los productores respecto a que era la roya, como se reconocía y a un estimulo permanente de búsqueda en los cafetales. Respecto a la caficultura en particular, se hizo una reorientación geográfica de las áreas de siembra, se entregó la variedad de cafeto Colombia resistente a la roya y se puso en manos de los caficultores toda una tecnología para la aspersión de fungicidas en planes definidos por región. Producto de estas acciones cuando la roya se identificó en Colombia en 1983, no produjo el desastre que se preveía y no ha pasado de ser un problema cuyo impacto en la producción cafetera, ha sido mínimo. La ganancia en los resultados científicos ha sido invaluable y la credibilidad de los caficultores en sus instituciones de apoyo es estrecha. El modelo seguido es un verdadero ejemplo de integración de objetivos y soportan el concepto de Salud Pública Vegetal, como estrategia para mantener los problemas fitosanitarios bajo control.<br>Coffee rust disease (Hemileia vastatrix) was a threat since the early 20th century for coffee colombian growers. In 1970 this important disease was detected in Brazil. From this time colombian authorities took several measures to confront the challenge of the disease. Some measures were oriented to reinforce the scientific capacity in the colombian centre for coffee research (CENICAFÉ) and plant quarantine at the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA). Coffee growers were prepared for what the disease is, how it was recognized and a permanent crop monitoring for symptoms. Colombian coffee regions were mapped, a resistant variety (cv. Colombia) was introduced by plant breeders and control technology defined by each crop region was transferred to agriculturists. When coffee rust arrived to Colombia in 1983 did not produce the expected crop disaster because of the actions taken previously; even more, this disease has caused a minimum impact in coffee bean production. Scientific advance has been invaluable and a great confidence in the institutions that support coffee production was obtained. The model product of this experience is a true example of objectives integration and support the concept of Public Plant Health as a strategy for keeping phytosanitary problems under control.
