Biological monitoring is a method to know the dynamics of ecosystems. The project Bird Monitoring at Mapimi Biosphere Reserve (MBR), Durango started from 2012 to 2017 and we studied bird species richness, abundance, and diversity in winter and breeding season. Fieldwork was carried out at 122 monitoring sites inside the protected area. We recorded species and individuals identified visually and by ear during 10 and 20 minute periods. Plant cover was also estimated. During all the sampled (5 years) we recorded 149 species with the highest values in 2015. Lark Bunting (Calamospiza melanocorys) was the species with the largest number of individuals observed. We found significant statistical differences in richness (P <0.05), the number of individuals (P <0.05) and percentage of plant cover (P <0.05) between winters of 2012 and 2017, and the summer in the same years. In the winters of 2016 and 2017 we found significant statistical differences in richness (P <0.05) and the number of individuals (P <0.05). No statistically significant differences were detected between the summer seasons in 2016 and 2017 (P >0.05).
