Plantas de cobertura leguminosas combinadas com plantio direto aumentam o teor de enxofre disponível em um Argissolo subtropical | Legume cover crops combined with no-tillage increase available sulfur content in subtropical acrisol

A intensificação dos sistemas de produção e a maior exportação de enxofre (S) na colheita dos grãos devido ao incremento de produtividade aumenta a necessidade de fertilização sulfatada. Por isso, é essencial definir estratégias de manejo visando favorecer a disponibilidade de S, especialmente em solos arenosos, com potencial de perdas por lixiviação. Este estudo avaliou o impacto de longo prazo (34 anos) de preparos de solo (PC, preparo convencional; PD, plantio direto) combinados com três sistemas de sucessão de culturas (A/M, aveia/milho; E/M, ervilhaca/milho; A+E/M+C, aveia + ervilhaca/milho + caupi), sem e com fertilização nitrogenada (180 kg ha–1 ) na cultura do milho, no teor de S disponível de um Argissolo no Sul do Brasil. Anualmente na semeadura do milho, ocorre a entrada de ~12,0 kg ha–1 de S via fertilização. Em março de 2019, o solo foi amostrado nas camadas de 0–5, 5–10, 10–20, 20–30 e 30–40 cm e estimado o teor de S disponível pela extração com Ca(H2PO4)2.H2O na concentração de 500 mg L–1 de P com determinação em ICP-OES. A ciclagem de S no solo foi influenciada principalmente pelas plantas de cobertura. Na ausência de N mineral, os sistemas com leguminosas de cobertura ciclaram 1,7 e 2,2 vezes mais S (17 e 22 kg ha–1 ano–1 nos tratamentos E/M e A+E/M+C) do que no sistema aveia/milho (10 kg ha–1 ano–1 ). A ervilhaca e o caupi favoreceram a exportação de S pelo milho na ausência de N mineral, passando de 2,1 (A/M- 0) para 4,0 kg ha–1 ano–1 (média E/M-0 e A+E/M+C-0). A entrada de S via fertilização (12 kg ha–1 ano–1 ) e a deposição atmosférica de 3,0 kg ha–1 ano–1 foram suficientes para suprir a exportação de S pelo milho, que variou de 2,1 a 6,9 kg ha–1 ano–1 . Os maiores teores de S disponível ocorreram na camada superficial (0–5 cm) do solo em PD, com uma forte relação (R2 = 0,83) com o conteúdo de carbono orgânico no solo (COS). Nessa camada de solo, o teor de S disponível aumentou 0,85 mg dm–3 para cada incremento de 1 g kg–1 de COS. O maior teor de S disponível em PD ocorreu com a ervilhaca (E/M), superior ao sistema A/M até 30 cm de profundidade (valores médios 11,1 e 7,3 mg dm–3 , respectivamente). A adubação nitrogenada no milho aliado a presença de leguminosas de cobertura triplicou a exportação de S nos grãos (73 kg ha–1 A/M- 0 a 236 kg ha–1 E/M-180), mas não afetou o teor de S disponível no solo negativamente. Em solos arenosos, é possível manter níveis adequados de S disponível desde que haja adoção de sistema conservacionista, através do PD combinado ao uso de leguminosas de cobertura de solo que intensifiquem a ciclagem de S e diminuam a perda do elemento por lixiviação.

The intensification of production systems and the higher removal of sulfur (S) by the grain harvest increases the need for sulfate fertilization. Therefore, it is essential to define management strategies aiming at favoring the availability of S, especially in sandy soils that present potential losses of S by leaching. This study evaluated the long-term (34 years) impact of soil tillage (CT, conventional tillage; NT, no-tillage) combined with three cropping succession systems (O/M, oat/maize; V/M, vetch/maize; O+V/M+C, oat + vetch/maize + cowpea), with (180 kg ha–1 ) and without nitrogen fertilization in maize crop, on the available S content in a sandy clay loam Acrisol from Southern Brazil. In each maize crop, 12.0 kg ha–1 of S was added via fertilization. In March 2019, the soil was sampled at the 0–5, 5–10, 10–20, 20–30, and 30–40 cm layers, and the available S content was estimated by extraction with Ca(H2PO4)2.H2O (500 mg L–1 of P) and determined by ICP-OES. Soil S cycling was mainly influenced by the cover crops. In the absence of N fertilization, the systems with legume cover crops cycled 1.7 and 2.0 times more S (17 and 22 kg ha–1 yr–1 in treatments V/M and O+V/M+C) than in the oat/maize system (10 kg ha–1 yr–1 ). Vetch and cowpea favored S removal by maize without N fertilization, going from 2.1 (O/M-0) to 4.0 kg ha–1 yr–1 (average V/M-0 and O+V/M+C-0). The S input via fertilization (12 kg ha–1 yr–1 ) and via atmospheric deposition (about 3.0 kg ha–1 yr–1 ) was enough to supply the S removal by maize, which ranged from 2.1 to 6.9 kg ha–1 yr–1 . The highest available S content occurred in the surface layer (0–5 cm) of soil in NT, with a strong relationship (R2 = 0.83) with soil organic carbon content (SOC). In this soil layer, the available S content increased by 0.85 mg dm–3 for each increment of 1 g kg–1 of SOC. The highest available S content in NT occurred with vetch (V/M), which was higher than the O/M cropping system up to 30 cm depth (mean values 11.1 and 7.3 mg dm–3 , respectively). Nitrogen fertilization tripled S removal in grains (73 kg ha–1 O/M-0 to 236 kg ha–1 V/M-180) but did not negatively affect soil available S content. In sandy soils, it is possible to maintain adequate levels of available S if there is conservationist adoption of the system, through NT combined with the use of legume cover crops that intensify the cycling of S and prevent the loss of the element by leaching.
