The BIOSISTEM project aims to delve into the mechanisms that determine the specificity and efficiency of nodulation mediated by T6SS and its effectors in rhizobia, using as model organism Sinorhizobium fredii USDA257, a strain with one of the largest known host ranges. In addition, this project aims to determine the role of this protein secretion system in competition with other rhizospheric bacteria including some phytopathogens. The expected results of this project will improve the existing knowledge on the mechanisms responsible for rhizobium-legume compatibility, as well as the possible use of these microorganisms not only as biofertilizing agents but also as biocontrol agents. Rhizobia can thus become a reference for the design of biofertilizers with added value (biocontrol activity) for legumes, whose use constitutes one of the most important strategies for sustainable agriculture based on the reduction of the use of nitrogen fertilizers and chemical pesticides, in favor of the rational use of bacterial inoculants.
