To develop a method for moisture content measurement without taking into consideration the influence of specific gravity, we tried to calculate the moisture content of Cryptomeria japonica from weight of the specimen and the amount of X-ray absorption. When moisture contents of all specimens were estimated by one regression equation, the root mean square error (RMSE) at the moisture contents of 100% and under was 15.9%. On the other hand, that RMSE was 4.7% when the regression equation was changed by the size of specimens. These results indicate that the method proposed in this study is effective to reduce the error of moisture content measurement due to variation in the specific gravity of wood. To apply this method to larger specimens, different beam hardening correction for wood and water should be embedded.
