A study on the regional economic ripple effects of the value chain construction by upland field irrigation project: A case study on the irrigation project in Nishimoro region, Miyazaki Prefecture

This study shows the results of the regional economic ripple effect in irrigation in the region of Nishimoro, Miyazaki prefecture. The results was based on an investigation on the contribution of the irrigation to the regional economic ripple effect, taking into consideration the agricultural product processing sales, direct sales to retailors, food services, and food processing companies by agriculture management entity. The overall finding of this investigation was that the above farmer's businesses has increased there realization probability by 12.6% with the assistant of the irrigation in Nishimoro region. The estimated parameters of the realization probability was calculated using calculation formula from non-aggregated data about agriculture management entity in Miyazaki prefecture and some areas in Kagoshima prefecture that was obtained through a survey by the Ministry of Agriculture, Foresty and Fisheries. As a result of such calculation, it shows an indication that the added value will increase by change of sales channels, increased crop yield per 10 acre and quality stabilization. In return, the regional economic ripple effect will reach 12.14 billion Yen in 2030. However, the irrigation project period in Nishimoro regions was started in 2010 and will proceed until 2069. The sum total (present discounted value) of the annual regional economic ripple effect is 193.59 billion Yen.
