A new rice cultivar 'Tanbonoyume' was developed from the progeny of the cross between 'Saga 5' and 'Ouu 346(thereafter Okiniiri)' at Saga Prefectual Agriculture Research Center in 2004. The breeding objective was to combine superior eating quality (similar to 'Hinohikari'), hig h yielding andhigh field resistance to blast. A promising line was selected by bulk breeding and named 'Saga 29' at the F9 generationin 1999. To be a recommended cultivar, performance of this cultivar was evaluated from 1996 to 2003. It was officially registered as 'Tanbonoyume' to Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery of Japan in 2004. The characteristics of this cultivar are as follows: 1. Heading and maturity date of 'Tanbonoyume' is respectively 2days and 3days later than those of 'Hinohikari'. 2. Culm lengh of 'Tanbonoyume' is 14-15cm shorter and panicle length is slightly longer than those of 'Hinohikari'. Panicle number unit area is nearly equal to 'Hinohikari'. Plant type of 'Tanbonoyume' belongs to intermediate type. 3. Lodging resistance of 'Tanbonoyume' is highly superior to that of 'Hinohikari'. 4. This cultivar possesses high yielding ability, which is 10% higher than that of 'Hinohikari', while it was evaluated at the breeding station with normal-season transplanting culture. 5. One thousand grain weight of 'Tanbonoyume' is 1.7-1.8g higher than that of 'Hinohikari'. Visual grain quality of 'Tanbonoyume' is slightly superior to that of 'Hinohikari'. 6. 'Tanbonoyume' seems to have the blast resistance gene Pi+, its field resistance to blast is weak but tobacterial leaf blight is slightly strong. 7. Eating quality of 'Tanbonoyume' is similar to that of 'Hinohikari'. 8. The volume after boiling of 'Tanbonoyume' is slightly bigger than that of 'Koshihikari' and 'Hinohikari'.
