'YamagataBW5' is a new buckwheat cultivar developed at Yamagata Integrated Agricultural Research Center in 2015. It was selected from the progeny of cross 'Dewakaori'/'Hitatiakisoba' made in 2008, aiming at a new cultivar with good grain appearance and resistance of lodging. 'YamagataBW5' was adapted as a recommended cultivar in Yamagata prefecture. Several important characteristics of 'YamagataBW5' are as follows. (1) 'YamagataBW5' is a medium to late maturing cultivar in Yamagata Prefecture. The time of maturity is 8 days later than 'Mogamiwase', and 5 days later than 'Dewakaori'. (2) The main stem length is longer, and the number of primary blanches is higher, and the stem diameter thicker than 'Mogamiwase' and 'Dewakaori'. (3) The yield rate of seed is Heavier than 'Dewakaori'. (4) The one liter weight is around 610g/L, and the thousand seed weight is around 35g, while they're between 'Mogamiwase' and 'Dewakaori'. (5) The green of seed coat color and buckwheat flour is derker than 'Dewakaori'. (6) The soba noodles eating qual is excellent and equal to that of 'Mogamiwase' and 'Dewakaori'. To reveal the high-quality and high-yielding cultivation techniques of buckwheat cultivar 'YamagataBW5', we investigated the effects of seeding conditions and harvest time. 'YamagataBW5' will be adapted to the paddy fields among the plains and middle mountains in Yamagata prefecture.
