The Nitrogen abasorbing characteristics of a direct sowing cabbage were made clear while the distribution of fertilizer application for a high-yield was investigated in regard to its growth phase. 1. Direct sowing largely increased the weight of a cabbage from the beginning as compared with transplantation and the difference in its weight gain especially became large on and after the middle of September (prior to head formation). On examination in every distribution of fertilizer application its weight increasingly changed till about November 10 in a group, where-in 50% or more of fertilizer was used in initial fertilizer application or after 35 days, as compared wth the other groups. 2. Direct sowing surpassed transplantation by 20-50% in its yield. On examination in every distribution of fertilizer application, the high yield was shown in a group where-in 50% or more of fertilizer was used in initial fertilizer application or after 35 days. 3. Viewed from a change in nitrogen absorbing quantity, direct sowing showed higher value in each time as compared with transplantation and its value was especially high in a group where-in 100% of fertilizer was applied before 35 days was elapsed and reached 27-35g/square m at November 8. In this case, high positive correlation was shown between the nitrogen absorbing quantity prior to head formation (at September 21) and the yield. 4. From the foregoing results, it was considered most effective in direct sowing that fertilizer application was equally distributed between initial fertilizer application and a period up to about 20 days before the beginning of head formation, because it was meade clear that direct sowing enhanced nitrogen absorption from the beginning of growth as compared with transplantation and it was important to allow a cabbage to absorb 50% or more of total nitrogen absorbing quantity before the beginning of head formation.
