In this study, carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized using a thermal method, resulting in nanoparticles with a mean particle size of 42.21 ± 5.79 nm. The CDs exhibited fluorescence properties when excited with UV light at a peak wavelength of 365 nm. Zeta potential measurements revealed negative values at different pH values, indicating favorable surface stability and low agglomeration. Optical absorption analysis showed absorption peaks at around 335 nm and 405 nm, suggesting the presence of aromatic structures in the synthesized CDs. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated the existence of functional groups, such as hydroxyl and amino groups, which contribute to the hydrophilicity and stability of the CDs. The distribution of the synthesized product in microreactor microchannels demonstrated improved interaction between reacting species and homogeneity of the mixture. Detection experiments using different concentrations of dye mixtures showed that CDs at a concentration of 0.0125% w/v exhibited better detection percentages for contaminants such as naphthol blue black (NBB) from one synthetic matrix of wastewater (SWw) that contained direct red 23 (DR23) and sodium bicarbonate. The addition of sodium bicarbonate enhanced the detection of NBB probably due to the production of carbonate radicals. FTIR analysis suggested hydrogen bonding interactions between the CDs and dyes. These findings underscored the potential applications of CDs in sensing and environmental domains, particularly in the detection, adsorption, and removal of pollutants from wastewater.
