The 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes had a great effect on layer farms in Kumamoto. Eleven percent of layers in Kumamoto prefecture-274,000 chickens on 5 farms-were moved rapidly to other farms because poultry houses collapsed owing to the earthquakes. Results of the survey conducted after the earthquakes showed there were differences in damage owing to differences in poultry house structure and cage system adopted, and a reduction in egg production ratio owing to the age of layers. Furthermore, the egg production rate of a flock of layers was confirmed to be below the standard curve for half a year.
