The microstructural record of convection in the Little Minch Sill Complex, Scotland - microstructural data
Holness, Marian
grain sizes of plagioclase, and the values of clinopyroxene-plagioclase-plagioclase dihedral angles, in three dolerite sills from the Little Minch Sill Complex, exposed on the Isle of Skye and the Shiant Isles of NW Scotland. In each of the Shiant Isles Main Sill, the Creagan Iar sill, and the Meall Tuath sill, a suite of samples was collected to form a vertical traverse across the full exposed height for detailed microstructural analysis. Grain sizes are measured as the long axis of each plagioclase grain intersection in photomicrographs of a thin section of the sample. Dihedral angles at three-grain junctions formed of two grains of plagioclase and one grain of augite were measured using a universal stage permitting the measurement of the true 3D values of the angle. In the associated paper, for each sample, the median value of each dihedral angle population is reported, together with the arithmetic mean of the grain size population.
