Distribución de delfínidos en las unidades de gestión ambiental de la costa occidental del golfo de México | Delphinids distribution across the environmental management units of the occidental coast from the gulf of Mexico.

Los cetáceos forman una parte importante de la comunidad marina del golfo de México (GM), pero actualmente se desconoce el efecto de las actividades antropogénicas sobre su distribución en aguas costeras mexicanas. El Programa de Ordenamiento Ecológico Marino y Regional del Golfo de México y Mar Caribe tiene la finalidad de implementar políticas ambientales dirigidas a la planeación territorial y el control de los impactos ambientales; dentro del programa se delimitaron las Unidades de Gestión Ambiental (UGAs) como una herramienta para la conservación. El objetivo de esta tesis fue evaluar la distribución de los cetáceos en 5 UGAs marinas de la zona costera de la región occidental del GM, desde el centro-sur de Tamaulipas hasta el sur de Veracruz, y su relación con la calidad ambiental. Entre 2015 y 2017 se realizaron 4 muestreos aéreos durante las temporadas de lluvias y secas, y se evaluó la calidad ambiental de las UGAs utilizando indicadores ambientales integrativos. Se registraron 329 individuos pertenecientes a la Familia Delphinidae: Tursiops truncatus, Grampus griseus y Globicephala macrhynchus, además de estenelas que podrían corresponder a dos especies, Stenella attenuata y S. frontalis, y un posible avistamiento de Steno bredanensis. Debido al bajo número de avistamientos (21) el análisis de la distribución se hizo a nivel de familia. La distribución de los delfínidos no fue diferente entre las temporadas, y fue homogénea entre las UGAs. Esto podría deberse al hecho de haber trabajado a nivel de familia, lo que eliminó las diferencias entre especies. En términos generales, la calidad ambiental de las UGAs aún es buena. La pérdida de vegetación costera es el principal problema en la región, pero debe prestarse atención al desarrollo de la industria de los hidrocarburos. Los resultados sugieren que la diversidad de cetáceos en la costa occidental de GM es relativamente alta (27% de las especies que habitan en el GM) y que usan esta área todo el año.

Cetaceans are an important part of the marine community of the Gulf of Mexico, but the effect of anthropogenic activities on their distribution in Mexican coastal waters is currently unknown. The Marine and Regional Ecological Ordinance Program of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea has the purpose of implementing environmental policies aimed at territorial planning and the control of environmental impacts; within the program, the Environmental Management Units (UGAs) were defined as a tool for conservation. The objective of this thesis was to evaluate the cetaceans’ distribution in 5 marine UGAs of the coastal zone of the western region of the Gulf of Mexico, from south-central Tamaulipas to southern Veracruz, and its relationship with environmental quality. Between 2015 and 2017, four aerial surveys were carried out during the rain and dry seasons, and the environmental quality of the UGAs was assessed using integrative environmental indicators. A total of 329 individuals of the Family Delphinidae were sighted: Tursiops truncatus, Grampus, griseus y Globicephala macrorhynchus, as well as stenellas that could correspond to two species, Stenella attenuata and S. frontalis, and a possible sighting of Steno bredanensis. Due to a low number of sightings, the distribution analyses were performed at the family level. The distribution of the delphinids was not different between seasons, and was homogeneous among the UGAs. These results could be explained by the fact that the analyses were carried out at the Family level, which eliminated the differences between species. In general, the environmental quality of the UGAs is still good. The loss of coastal vegetation is the main problem in the region, but attention must be paid to the hydrocarbons industry development. The results suggest that the diversity of cetaceans in the western coast of the Gulf of Mexico is relatively high (27% of the species that inhabit the Gulf of Mexico), and that they use this area year around.
