Sculpture in the garden : a study of sculptural works in private spaces : a dissertation in part fulfilment of the course requirements for the post-graduate Diploma in Landscape Architecture, Lincoln College, University of Canterbury
1988
Oaks, Adrienne I.
This dissertation began as a first, somewhat tentative step towards my own understanding of the expansive subject of private garden design, and the role sculpture may play in it. As such, it is not intended to be a totally complete or definitive work on the subject. It is a beginning, to be built upon as time, experience and enthusiasm permit. The intended purpose of this work, therefore, is that of a learning exercise, and the basic aim of this dissertation is to follow some of the many threads of historical events that have led to the way sculptural works are used in gardens in present-day New Zealand, to explore the techniques relevant to placing and experiencing sculpture, and to look at some examples of contemporary New Zealand statuary, sculpture and sculptors whose work is found in private gardens in this country.
