The landscape of beach settlements
1988
Dreadon, David J
This study looks at beach settlements and the effect they have on the visual character of the coast environment. The problems created by beach settlements in terms of environmental damage, aesthetic impact and the reduction of recreation options are introduced. Descriptions of coastal geomorphology and sand dune vegetation are included to illustrate the biophysical nature of the beach. Cultural features including coastal land uses, legislative administration governing coastal development and history of beach settlements are briefly described. The character and aesthetic impact of beach settlement are examined. The pressures exerted on the coastal landscape by beach settlements and their various components are analysed. Some approaches to beach settlement planning and design are forwarded, with an emphasis on integrating cultural components with environmental features. Opportunities for landscape architects to assist in the sensitive development of beach settlements are noted.
