اظهر المزيد [+] اقل [-]إنجليزي. Thanks to its characteristic shape, color and taste, the tomato is one of the world's most popular vegetables. It is appreciated in every country for its relative ease of cultivation, high yields and diverse uses, both fresh and processed. Tomato domestication led to an increase in the diversity of fruit shape and color, and an increase in fruit size. Humans have also selectively bred the tomato's ability to produce identical plants in subsequent generations by establishing autogamy . The 12 wild species related to the tomato can be crossed (more or less easily) with the cultivated tomato and have played a key role in plant breeding. Wild species have been the source of many pathogen resistance genes, and varieties resistant to one or more diseases have been developed. Adaptations to extreme environmental conditions (drought, salinity and cold) were obtained from crosses with related species adapted to these conditions.
