إنجليزي. Rhizogenesis is a complex process involving many factors. The anatomical, physiological, biochemical aspects of root initiation have been studied for several decades already, whereas genetic and molecular approaches of such a process have been developed more recently. In the first part of this paper, a study on poplar is presented, showing that rhizogenesis is under a strong genetic control with a high heritability and that a relevant QTL has been identified. In the second part, the first putative genes which might play a role in root initiation are presented. In addition, interesting results show how these genes could be used through the techniques of gene transfer in order to improve the number of roots and the quality of the root system.

فرنسي. La rhizogenèse est un processus de morphogenèse complexe qui met en jeu de très nombreux facteurs. Si les aspects anatomiques, physiologiques, biochimiques,… ont été abondamment étudiés, l'identification des gènes impliqués en est à ses tous premiers débuts. Dans un premier temps, cet article traite du contrôle génétique de la rhizogenèse chez le peuplier marqué par une héritabilité élevée et l’identification d'un QTL1 lié à l'enracinement. Dans un deuxième temps, les premiers gènes connus pouvant être impliqués dans l'initiation de racines adventives sont présentés en liaison avec le développement des biotechnologies, incluant la transgenèse dans le but de modifier les caractéristiques qualitatives et quantitatives de cet enracinement.
