[ES] El Instituto de Ciencias del Mar de Barcelona (ICM), perteneciente al Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), es un centro de investigación marina interdisciplinario que se dedica al estudio integral del medio marino y de los organismos que lo habitan. Una de sus principales actividades son las campañas oceanográficas donde participan distintos especialistas – físicos, químicos, biólogos, geólogos, tecnólogos - en la obtención y la investigación posterior de datos científicos que aportan una visión global del ecosistema marino. A partir de 1975 surgió la necesidad de constituir un fondo catalogado de especímenes ictiológicos marinos recolectados a partir de las expediciones científicas realizadas. En 1982 quedó institucionalizada la Colección de Peces y en 1991 se amplió a un marco faunístico más amplio denominándose Colecciones Biológicas de Referencia (CBR) del ICM. Actualmente las CBR custodian un patrimonio de historia natural de más de 26000 especímenes y más de 1800 especies catalogadas de peces (Pisces), crustáceos (Crustacea Decapoda) y cefalópodos (Mollusca Cephalopoda) que incluyen holotipos y paratipos. Éstas proceden mayoritariamente del Mar Mediterráneo y del Océano Atlántico. Su función principal es actuar como referentes científicos y generar conocimiento sobre la biodiversidad marina

[EN] The Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM) in Barcelona belongs to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). It is an interdisciplinary marine research center dedicated to an integrative study of the marine environment and all organisms living in it. One of the main activities is the oceanographic cruises where different specialists participate – physicists, chemists, biologists, geologists, technologists – obtaining and processing scientific information which contribute to obtain a global view of the marine ecosystem. In 1975 the necessity to build a catalogued collection of ichtyological marine specimens obtained from scientific cruises was detected. In 1982 the Fish Collection was formaly became institutionalized and gradually grew including other groups, changing its name to Biological Reference Collections (CBR) housed at the ICM. At this moment, CBR represents a natural history heritage containing over 26,000 specimens and 1,800 catalogued species of fishes (Pisces), crustaceans (Crustacea Decapoda) and cephalopods (Mollusca Cephalopoda) which includes Holotypes and Paratypes. Most specimens came from the Mediterranean Sea, and Atlantic Ocean. The CBR’s principal function is to act as a scientific reference and give new insights about marine biodiversity
