In this review, we examine the potential of (bio)surfactants, the chemotactic mobilization of pollutant-degrading bacteria, and the role of bacterial attachment, to enhance biodegradation of PAHs. Plants can also play an active role in enhancing bioavailability of PAHs through rhizosphere-related mechanisms associated to specific exudate components that affect bacterial chemotaxis, pollutant mobilization, and intra-aggregate bacterial growth.
