The misuse and abuse of antimicrobial agents as a strong and steady selective force combined with the intrinsic genetic properties of bacteria have led to the emergence and spread of resistant pathogens worldwide, raising fears of a possible return of mankind to the pre-antibiotic era and a re-emergence of fatal infectious diseases without a possibility of any effective treatment. According to the Political Declaration of the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance, adopted on September 21, 2016, all countries in the world are required to establish a monitoring system for the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria and for the use of antimicrobials in human and veterinary medicine. In view of antimicrobial resistance, the priority in the Republic of Serbia is the immediate implementation of the National Program and Action Plan for the Control of Bacterial Resistance to Antibiotics, based on the concept of One Health, which requires close cooperation between doctors, veterinarians, pharmacists, livestock farmers, politicians and society as a whole. As a particular priority, it is necessary to develop and implement guidelines for the responsible use of antimicrobials in veterinary medicine, to establish a system for monitoring the use of antimicrobials in domestic animals in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2019/6 of the European Parliament and of the Council on veterinary medicinal products and to introduce the monitoring of antimicrobial resistance in commensal and zoonotic bacteria in companion animals in compliance with the requirements of Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2020/1729 on the monitoring and reporting of antimicrobial resistance in zoonotic and commensal bacteria.
